If you have a dance partner you will enjoy your skill both socially and competitively. The dances are very entertaining and due to its popularity, you can see it on films, TV and on stage. There are basically two major styles of the traditional ballroom dance, International and American.  The International style is more well-liked worldwide while the American style can only be seen at the local clubs and parties in the USA. The two differ from one another in terms of the number of steps and style of steps.

The International style is further divided into two categories, Standard and Latin. The standard style is more trendy and modish than the Latin style. Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz and the QuickStep are standard while Cha-Cha, Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble, and Jive are Latin.

In the International standard style, the dancers remain in a closed dance position and it is a very smooth dance which is also unique. On the other hand, the Latin style is known for its rhythmic moves. There is also more hip movement in the Latin styles.  The American style of ballroom dance falls into two categories, Smooth and Rhythm. Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz and Bolero are the American Smooth dances while the American Rhythm styles are Cha-Cha, Rumba, Swing, and Mambo. The non-traditional dance styles include Country 2-Step, Night Club 2-Step, Argentine Tango, Merengue, Polka, West Coast Swing, and more.

All ballroom dance is a partnered dance where one partner is in the lead while the other follows. These dances have a social nature and are also used for competitive events.  The Cha-Cha dance has the Cuban movements and is often seen at dance competitions. Partners show off their synchronicity of movement and alignment. This dance may be tough for some to learn. The Foxtrot, on the other hand, is a very simple and a good choice for any beginner. Dancers move around the floor in a flowing movement using long steps. Another popular dance style of the ballroom dance is the Jive. This dance came out from the United States and was created by the African-Americans. It is a deviation of the jitterbug and has a lively technique. While Lindy Hop is a very athletic dance and is a variation of the Swing dance. Experienced dancers are able to make perfect flips, twists and aerial jumps. This dance style became popular in the 1930s. It is named after Charles Augustus Lindbergh who made the first solo transatlantic flight in 1927.

Mambo, on the other hand, is a very emotional dance. It consists of hip movements, arm movements, and facial expressions. It displays sensuality and was very popular in the 1940s and ’50s in New York and Cuba. This dance style is the creation of Perez Prado, a Cuban bandleader, organist, pianist and composer who also appeared in movies. Prado is and will always be remembered as the King of the Mambo.

Quickstep is a popular dance which is like foxtrot except it is danced a bit faster. This dance style has quick runs and steps and is like no other dance.  It is fun to watch but very difficult to perform. To master the dance, one will have to spend a lot of time training.

Like Mambo, Rumba is an emotional dance, but more on the romantic side.  Some rate it as the most sensual and romantic of all the Ballroom dance. It is danced to a 4/4 beat, a rhythm pattern used in disco and electronic dance music.

Samba, on the other hand, is more popular among people of all ages. This dance can be performed solo. People do the Samba in solo at events such as Brazil’s Carnival in Rio de Janeiro where you can see the elite Samba schools parading through the Sambadrome. The event showcases themed performances.

Very much like Rumba, Tango is also a sensual dance. This ballroom dance style came out from Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the late 19th century. The style has changed over the years and what you see in dance competitions these days is quite different as compared to the original style.

Comparatively the Waltz is a very smooth ballroom dance. Dancers use the long, flowing movements and make turns, with a rise and fall. This is a very graceful dance and can be often seen at weddings and formal events. Viennese Waltz has the quicker rotations as compared to the Waltz. It is a very hard dance for beginners to learn. Steps are also quite different than the Waltz and it is almost 4 times faster.
