If you want to grow your writing career, you need to be versatile in writing and expression. The best way to do so is by understanding the different writing styles and learning them to use in your content. Practicing the main writing styles, along with improving your English grammar and vocabulary will help you write error-free, plagiarism-free and interesting content, and connect with your audience better.

Each writing style has a different purpose, personality, and characteristics. They help you write different content, such as a romantic novel, a viral news article, a health magazine and so on.

We have shared the four main types of writing styles that we thought would help you.

Writing Style #1

Expository

Students’ textbooks are a classic example of Expository writing.  They don’t persuade readers, but rather inform them. If you wish to explain a concept, share information, describe a serious incident, or answer the ‘how, why, when, who, what, where’ questions to a wider audience, you can use expository writing style.

A lot many types of contents fall under this category. Newspapers, magazines, DIYs, self-help books, guides and workbooks, textbooks, cookbooks, medical journals and articles, and non-fiction books are some examples.

While writing expository content, your focus should remain on informing and instructing readers with well-researched facts and insights.

Correct example:

Doctors from XXX University Studies the Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Incorrect example:

Amazing Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar You Should Know

Writing Style #2

Descriptive

While expository writing provides factual details and researched information, descriptive writing styles go a step ahead by explaining things using metaphors and similes, such as “the color of her eyes was a deep shade of coral green”.

The goal of using descriptive writing is to make readers experience what you did.

Most fictional books, personal and travel blogs fall under this category.

The more you describe a scenario or issue, the more appealing your content would be to the reader.

Classic examples of descriptive writing include Poetry, Travel Diaries, Personal Journals, and Song lyrics.

Example:

“In the background of the photo was the fake white Christmas tree his mother had set up in the living room every year. The baubles caught the flash of the camera and the tinsel twinkled” – A Place Called Here by Cecelia Ahern.

Descriptive writing styles are not very long, but they are incomplete without Narrative writing.

Writing Style #3

Narrative

Narrative writing goes a notch further down in describing a scenario. It has a start, middle, and an end. The author narrates events by getting into deeper thoughts.

All great novels are perfect examples of narrative writing, where the author describes everything – right from the color of the eyes of the character to the sound of the seagull in the background of the hero and heroine. Narratives usually end with a conflict or a dialogue.

Narrative writing comprises of – A prologue, a story, a clear and complete plot with characters, setting, people, etc., dialogues, a resolution, sequences, and an epilogue.

Biographies, Novels, Screenplays, Myths, Sagas, Historical events, Memoirs, and Epic poems are examples.

Writing Style #4

Persuasive

The persuasive writing style is becoming very common in digital marketing. Politician’s speeches are classic examples of persuasive writing, where they urge the audience to reciprocate to their words by taking profitable actions, such as casting a vote.

Title examples include

“Why It is Important to Take Apple Cider Vinegar” or

“Why Should You Learn Different Writing Styles for Content Development”.

Persuasive content should be written with the intention to convince the reader to take relatable actions, such as making a purchase, share a blog, use a product, click on the page, type a comment, and so on.

Blogs, advertisements, web content company brochures, business proposals are prominent examples of persuasive writing.

Once you have understood the writing formats, you can modify them and create hundreds of your own styles to enhance your profile. The more you practice, the more niches will you able to cover.
